Hoy tengo el gusto de presentarles a TheSampleThief, desde Suiza. Es un músico, remezclador, productor y estudiante de psicología. Le hice algunas preguntas para que puedan conocerlo, además de música fantástica que esta publicando en la nueva serie Voyager Missions de Vitamina Recordings. Aquí vamos.

Se interesó en la música electrónica hace unos quince años, un amigo suyo le mostró “Reason” el DAW, le voló la cabeza y empezó a hacer música electrónica usandolo él mismo.
Ha estado haciendo música desde que era un niño, toco la trompeta por unos 13 años de su vida en orquestas juveniles, conjuntos de jazz y muchas otras formaciones como esas. Entonces cambió su instrumento de una trompeta por una laptop. Le encanta ser creativo y hacer música es la forma perfecta de serlo para él.

Me comentó que en sus influencias musicales hay mucho techno alemán (como Thomas Schumacher, Oliver Huntemann y Stephan Bodzin), pero también una variedad de otra música electrónica, por ejemplo Boyz Noise, Daft Punk, Justice y Mr. Oizo. Hace tiempo cuando era “cool”, oía mucho EDM y dubstep, así que él cree que esas influencias quizás estén todavía en algun lugar de su música.

Nos hace un inventario de su estudio. Hardware: un viejo teclado MIDI que tiene más de diez años de M-Audio es el único hardware que tiene, además de su laptop y unos auriculares Beyerdynamic. Software: su programa por elección es FL-Studio 20. También le gusta buscar en internet plugins gratuitos, algunos de sus favoritos son el Tone2Firebird y el nuevo Vital.Audio synth. La producción musical en su opinión no tiene por que ser costosa.

En cuanto a la preferencia entre remezclar o producir, absolutamente ama remezclar, pero le gusta la libertad de producir sus própias cosas también. Es además, muy quisquilloso con lo que quiere remezclar y cuando, a veces no es siempre música electrónica, ha hecho algunas remezclas para bandas de metal.

Su proceso creativo es en general muy similar, se inspira por un tema que le gusta de veras, entónces se sienta y comienza a probar cosas y ver donde lo llevan. La mayoría de la veces termina en un lugar muy distinto de donde empezó o lo que se proponía hacer, pero así es como trabaja normalmente.

En estos tiempos de pandemia siente que ha sido afortunado de poder trabajar desde su casa (en este momento esta estudiando para su grado en Psicología, hace investigación y enseña en la Universidad, de momento todo en forma virtual). Por otro lado, no ha sido fácil, de verdad extraña los festivales, salir a conciertos y clubs, etc. Pero espera que lo peor ya haya pasado.

Today I have the pleasure to introduce to you: TheSampleThief, from Switzerland. He is a musician, a remixer, producer and psycology student. I have asked him some questions so you can get to know him, besides the fantastic music he is releasing in the new “Vogager Missions” series by Vitamina Recordings.

He got involved in electronic music about 15 years ago, a friend of his showed him the “Reason” DAW. He was totally blown away by it and started making electronic music using that DAW himself.
He has been making music since he was a little kid, he played the trumpet for around 13 years of his life and played in youth orchestras, jazz ensembles, and other formations like that. Then he just switched his “instrument” from a trumpet to a laptop. He loves being creative and making music is the perfect outlet for him.

He has commented on his musical influences we can find a lot of German techno (like Thomas Schumacher, Oliver Huntemann and Stephan Bodzin), but also a variety of other electronic music, for example, Boyz Noise, Daft Punk, Justice, and Mr. Oizo. Back then, when it was “cool”, he listened to a lot of EDM and dubstep, so he thinks those influences might still be somewhere in his music.

Time to make inventory in his studio. Hardware: An over 10 years old MIDI Keyboard from M-Audio is the only hardware he owns besides his Laptop and some decent Beyerdynamic Headphones. Software: His DAW of choice is FL-Studio 20. He also likes searching for free plugins online, some of his favorites are Tone2Firebird and the new Vital.Audio synth. To his mind, music production really doesn’t have to be expensive!

On the choice of remixing vs producing, he absolutely loves remixing, but he likes the freedom of coming up with his own stuff more. He is also very picky about what he wants to remix and how often, sometimes it is not even electronic music. He has made some remixes for metal bands too.

His creative process is often very similar. He gets inspired by a track he really likes, then he just sits down and starts trying stuff out and see where it takes him. Most of the time, he ends up in a very different place from where he started or what he was set out to do, but that is how he normally works.

During this lockdown time, he feels fortunate to have been able to work from home. He is currently working on his PhD in Psychology and does research along with teaching at the Siegen University, all in virtual mode. On the other hand, it hasn’t been easy, he really misses festivals, going out to concerts and clubs, but he hopes we have the worst behind us now.
