Atari Safari es uno dúo que hace música en directo, son también productores y dj’s. Sus integrantes son Ben Booker y Keef Laverty. Se conocieron a través de un amigo en común, comenzaron a producir música juntos, cosa que involucro mucha cerveza y noches alocadas, muchas noches largas en el estudio de producción unieron a Atari Safari.

Para Ben, su interés en la música comenzó a una edad muy temprana, Aprendió a tocar el piano desde los cuatro años y tiene un entrenamiento formal, comenzó a componer música a los 14 años y continuó sus estudios terciarios estudiando tecnología musical. Se convirtió en un ingeniero de sonido para actuaciones en directo, trabajando para artistas y bandas como Bob Dylan, Scissor Sisters y 5sos, más recientemente haciendo la mezcla de sonido directo para David Guetta y Bicep. Ha estado desde muy joven interesado en la música electrónica. Por su lado Keef ha sido DJ y promotor de eventos toda su vida como adulto, viajando a todas partes, tocando sesiones como DJ y produciendo eventos. Dueño de un buen oído y buen gusto por la música, Keef sabe lo que una pista de baile quiere y necesita. El conjunto de habilidades que tienen es impresionante, han logrado dominar muchos aspectos del arte y del negocio que otros artistas sueñan con lograr alguna vez.

Hablando de sus influencias musicales, el Acid House y la escena musical del house de Chicago son gigantes para ellos, también han sido una influencia bandas como The Smiths, Prodigy y los Chemical Brothers. Los ingredientes de una receta única y deliciosa. Ambos gustan de todos los los estilos de música, cosa que les permite ir musicalmente a donde quieran. La escena musical Rave en sus comienzos y el Acid House han sido definitivamente lo que los ha marcado.

Como artistas, pueden tanto producir su propia música como también remezclar la de otros, prefieren producir lo propio, pero también se divierten remezclando. La libertad de crear música en el estudio cada semana is lo que impulsa a Atari Safari. Hacen un excelente balance entre el software y el hardware. Ben trabaja en el departamento de pruebas de sintetizadores de la compañía Behringer, tiene muchos prototipos nuevos para probar (y debemos concordar todos en que es un trabajo soñado para muchos de nosotros). Usan Logic para controlar todo el estudio que está repleto de muchos juguetes analógicos para usar. También se suma un sistema Eurorack para crear sonidos todavía más extraños. La creatividad puede venir de cualquier lado.

Sobre las razones para empezar a producir música y no solo mezclar como dj’s, fue amor a primera vista, o primera escucha en este caso para Ben, quien consiguió su primer Juno 106 y Akay S950 a los 14 con una vieja Atari ST y nunca miró hacia atrás. Luego lo estudió todo en la universidad.

Todo este arduo trabajo y dedicación da sus frutos, al momento de escribir “UFO”, encontraron una muestra (sample) de audio mientras estaban buscando alguna voz. Querían hacer una pista de deep tech, construyéndola alrededor de esa muestra. Parte del proceso creativo incluye la infusión del bajo ácido de la 303 y la percusión latina, este es un excelente ejemplo de su sonido característico. La frutilla encima de la torta llegó cuando le pidieron a su buen amigo ROYLE4NINE que lo remezclara, con un resultado sorprendente.

Trabajar como ingenieros de sonido en eventos ha producido momentos memorables y divertidos. Uno de los más divertidos fue en la fiesta de los Oscar de Elton John con Scissor Sisters. Elton apareció con un conjunto deportivo de color rosa y se comportó muy amable. Se puede decir con toda confianza que fue una fiesta para recordar.

Sin embargo, la diversión no se detiene en los eventos de otros artistas, ¡Atari Safari organiza su propio evento, llamado Citrik! Es un evento muy popular con grandes nombres como Andy Carrol, Jenny Harrison, Greenbins y Pirate Copy en las bandejas junto con el show en directo de Atari Safari. ¡Un evento que no debes perderte!

Atari Safari is flying on a UFO all over, they are live music duo act, music producers and dj’s. They are Ben Booker and Keef Laverty. Ben an Keef met through a mutual friend and started making tracks together with lots of beer and mad nights involved, many late nights in the studio cemented Atari Safari.

For Ben, his interest in music started really at an early age. Ben learnt to play the piano from 4 years old and is classically trained, he then started composing at 14 and went on to go to music college studying music technology. He then became a live sound engineer for bands like Bob Dylan, Scissor Sisters and 5sos, and more recently mixing live sound for David Guetta and Bicep. He has always been into electronic music from a young age. Keef has been a DJ and promoter for all his adult life. Flying all over, playing shows and putting events on. With a great ear and taste for music, Keef knows what the dance floor wants and needs. Their skillset is impressive, they have mastered so many aspects of the art and the business others artists can only dream of.

Among their musical influences, Acid House and the Chicago House scene are massive ones. Also to take into account, bands like The Smiths, Prodigy and Chemical Brothers all add into the mix! They both like all music styles so they can go anywhere. The early rave scene was a big influence as well, along with Acid House being a massive influence on both of them.

On the balance of writing music vs. remixing, writing is preferred, but they also find remixing a fun activity too. The freedom in the studio to create music every week is what drives Atari Safari forward. When it comes to the use of software and hardware, there is a good balance between them. Ben runs the Behringer synth testing department so they have lots of new prototypes to play with (and we must all agree it is a dream job for many of us). They use Logic to control the whole studio with many great analog toys to mess with. Plus a Eurorack system to create even stranger sounds. Creativity can come from anywhere. On the reasons to start to produce music and not only mixing as dj’s, it was love at first sight, or first listen in this case for Ben, who got his first Juno 106 and Akay S950 at 14 with and old Atari ST and has never looked back. Then he studied it all at College.

All of this hard work and dedication pays off, at the time of writing “UFO”, they found the sample while digging around. They wanted to make a deep tech track, building it around that sample. Part of the creative process includes the infusion of the acid 303’s bass and latin percussion, this is a prime example of their signature sound. The cherry on top of the cake came when they asked their good friend ROYLE4NINE to remix it, with a stunning result.

Being around working as sound engineers at events, have produced memorable and funny moments. One of the funniest was at Elton John’s Oscars party with Scissor Sisters. Elton turned up in a pink tracksuit and was pussy cat.It is safe to say it was a party to never forget. Yet, the fun does not stop in someone else’s events, Atari Safari runs its own event, named Citrik! It is a very popular event with great names like Andy Carrol, Jenny Harrison, Greenbins and Pirate Copy on the decks along with Atari Safari live shows. An event not to be missed!
