We would like to introduce to you today, the first Drum & Bass artist in Sicknation Vitamina Recordings. Welcome Bright Lights!

Bright Lights’ first involvement in electronic music was back in his teenage years, his childhood friend (who is now an accomplished film director) at that time had some old hardware and would record music.
He ‘collaborated’ with him, but in actuality, their song was made almost entirely by his friend, with him just providing a sample and a rough idea. Bright lights intended to buy some hardware equipment himself so he could collaborate with his friend more substantially, but never did.
It was a few years later when a couple of other old friends had got into making software-based music that Bright Lights took some tips from them. They’ve also provided him with a lot of encouragement and inspiration over the years, seeing their own success and creativity in the musical field. There have been a few established DJs and producers over the years who have taken the time to listen to his music, given him constructive feedback and encouragement, and even played his music on radio and in the clubs and raves, he is hugely grateful to all of them.

Making music had been a longstanding passion of his, and he just knew he wanted to get the sounds in his head out there and playing through speakers! .
He also comes from a musical family, with his uncles, his grandmother, and his grandmother’s brother all having been highly regarded and influential Irish musicians (& writers). Whilst his approach to music was a little different, he felt the resonance and connection, which came through via inspiration, and through his passion for music and creativity.

Bright Lights is heavily influenced by old electronic music from The UK, Europe, and the US, in particular the underground hardcore, techno, bass music, jungle, and drum & bass sounds, but really, anything good from anywhere on Earth will catch his ear. He tends to prefer stuff with an underground vibe, and some depth and originality to it.

On the question of preference on producing or remixing he is first into producing because it allows him to take his ideas in any direction he chooses, and put the sounds he hears within his heart and mind into concrete form. But remixing can also be good, if it’s a track he genuinely loves, and wants to take in a new creative direction.
For all production and remixing matters, he is currently doing everything in Ableton. He has previously used both Logic and Protools, but Ableton to him is extremely streamlined and efficient for electronic music, and makes the whole process easier.

As we are talking about producing music, he has commented on the creative process for the tracks he is releasing with Sicknation Vitamina Recordings that Both these tracks occupy a space within d&b which resonates with the old sound of the 1990s, whilst keeping the production up-to-date.
For Sunshine & Rain, he wanted to combine lush atmospherics with some tough, heavy beats and bass, creating a contrasting, cohesive whole.
Jungle Techno War Dub is really his tribute to the 1990s! It’s his way of paying homage to the sound all those legendary DJs, labels, and producers made in the early days of the global jungle & drum & bass movement, using hardware samples throughout to maintain sonic authenticity, whilst again making use of some of the ease of sample & beat manipulation Ableton provides to take it somewhere a little bit new and different.

On life and emotions management during the pandemic he has been somewhat lucky in that, following an illness, he had to make a lifestyle change a few years back, which involves keeping a daily check on his emotions, so he felt somewhat prepared for life in the pandemic. However, to his mind, it has obviously been tough for everyone, adjusting to lockdown, family illnesses, and such.
